ABOUT ME
Hillary Ann Miles is a grades 7-12 English teacher with her Masters in Education. A lover of reading and writing, she hopes to inspire the desire and power of words in all of her students. As an educator, Hillary focuses on student centered interactive and engaging learning environments to build communities of collaborative readers and writers. Hillary believes literacy is the core building block to constructing student success, and she strives to provide textual accessibility and inspire a love of reading within each of her students.
Hillary graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with her Bachelors in English Literature concentrating in literacy, education, and adolescent texts and culture. She also received a certificate in Children's Literature where she extensively examined the role of young adult literature in contemporary culture and citizen construction. Hillary will graduate with her Masters in Education in December of 2014 from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. While at Kutztown University, Hillary worked as the Graduate Assistant Manager of the Writing Center where she worked extensively with struggling writers and English Learners to build the writing skills necessary to navigate through college level and professional writing. As a reader turned writer, Hillary came to love the writing process after she found the balance between incorporating her voice into formulaic academic writing and harvesting her style from liberating creative writing. Inspired by her time managing the Writing Center, creating identity through writing is a skill Hillary has continued to employ with her students.
In addition to being an avid reader of young adult literature, Hillary enjoys conducting independent research into contemporary educational practices and policies. She is extensively involved in professional development and enjoys participating in educational communities through teacher conventions, conferences, institutes, and workshops. In the future, Hillary hopes to continue her schooling in education and work within curriculum design and implementation on the state and federal level. This summer, Hillary passed her Reading Specialist Praxis. She hopes to continue her education by pursuing administrative and doctoral programs.
